Greg Stube

FORT BRAGG — Gregory A. Stube was very seriously wounded during Operation Medusa in Afghanistan, September 2006.

On a hill called Sperwan Ghar, in southwest Afghanistan, Stube and fellow SF team members were involved in a massive attack by enemy Taliban forces that had dug in; waiting for a fight. As his fighting vehicle moved up the hill, days after the fighting had began, it was hit by an IED - seriously wounding Stube. Focusing on his wounds and pulling from his Special Forces medical training, Stube guided other SF A-team members in combat trauma care until he was moved out of danger.

Stube was assigned to a civil affairs unit at the time, but volunteered for the combat engagement in Afghanistan with 3rd Special Forces Group (A) from Fort Bragg, N.C. He also served throughout the 1990’s and into the new millennium with 10th Special Forces Group (A) at Fort Carson, Colorado.

He began his SF career when he volunteered and completed

Special Forces Assessment and Selection in 1992 at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School. He graduated the Special Forces Qualification Course as a SF medical sergeant, or 18D. This medical training includes extensive trauma management, surgery, anesthesia, orthopedics, pediatrics, pharmacology, OB / L&D, minor dentistry and limited veterinary medicine. Stube is also a certified Dive Medical Technician, trained at the Special Forces Underwater Operations Facility. Stube completed Russian language training as a part of his initial SF training program.

In addition to his service on the functional element of the “Green Berets,” known as the A-team, Stube served as a trainer for the Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course, and spent four years as Cadre in the distinguished John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.

From Covington, Tenn., Stube joined the Army in 1988 as an infantryman. His father, Rick, is a retired Navy Chief and Vietnam War veteran. Chief (R) Rick Stube still resides in Covington. His wife,

Donna, and their young son, Gregory Jr., reside in Cameron, N.C.

His awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, multiple Army Commendation Medals, multiple Army Achievement Medals, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, multiple Expeditionary Medals, multiple NATO Medals, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Romanian Parachutist Badge, the German Silver Marksmanship award, as well as the Special Forces Tab and many other notable military honors.

Currently assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Public Affairs Office, Stube continues to serve within his capabilities to promote awareness of the commitment and sacrifice of American service members and their families. In a program called “Service Beyond Sacrifice,” Stube endeavors to relate to Americans about why service to our country

Greg Stube

is not only important, but worth sacrificing for.

Stube dedicates his free time to helping other wounded Soldiers by assisting many civilian organizations in arranging special activities and events for wounded Soldiers and their Family Members. The reception and reintegration of our warriors returning from combat has become his primary interest.
